The map depicts Maastricht as it was when the French returned it to the Dutch following the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. It illustrates the complex star-shaped reinforcements that characterized the city’s defenses during the late 17th century. The top-right section contains a legend (Renvoi) for local landmarks like the Porte St. Pierre and various other city gates. The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
