The plan illustrates the extensive fortifications, including citadel “Le Chateau” and the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers. The top-left corner contains a decorative cartouche with the publisher’s address in Paris (“A PARIS… à la Sphere Royalle”) and a scale in toises. The bottom-left includes a brief history of the city. The top-right corner features a “Renvoi” or key, labeling major city gates, bridges, and defense structures with letters A through N. The engraving comes from the Nicolas de Fer atlas “Les Forces de l’Europe, ou Description des principales villes, avec leurs fortifications.” engraved by Herman van Loon, published in Paris, 1693.
