This handmade Aparmita (Amitayus) sculpture holds the immortality vessel in his lap, filled with amrita, the nectar of longevity, its lid rising into an ornamental sprouting plume. Aparmita’s blue-black hair is gathered into a tall topknot rising above his crown, capped with a gold finial — the ushnisha arrangement counted among the traditional 32 marks of an enlightened being. The urna, the third eye between the brows, indicates that Aparmita has achieved the state of perfected wisdom. A distinctive feature of this piece is the pair of large scrolled ornaments resting atop both shoulders, sweeping outward in wing-like swirls that frame the head and lend the figure a regal, celestial bearing.Aparmita sits in full lotus pose, also known as the vajra pose. Vajra is a Sanskrit word translating as diamond or lightning bolt — a symbol of indestructible virtue. This sculpture would make an inspirational addition to your home or meditation center.Aparmita sculptures serve as the centerpiece of Tibetan longevity rituals, because Aparmita is the embodiment of the longevity attribute of Amitabha Buddha. Buddhas and high-level Bodhisattvas have the ability to take any form necessary to ease the suffering of sentient beings, and Amitabha appears as Aparmita to grant long life to devotees. The fine detail across the piece is the result of this time-tested technique: the statue rests on a striking two-tier lotus throne, with a smaller upper pedestal seated atop a broad, dome-shaped lotus base ringed with bold petals and multiple bands of decorative engraving, while the cuffs and hems of his dhoti are richly worked with scrollwork around the ankles.
