Title:                 ” Amplissimae Regionis Mississipi Seu Provinciae Ludovicianae A R.P. Ludovico Hennepin Francisc Miss In America Septentrionali Anno 1687 . . .”​ ​ Description: Homann’s important and highly decorative map of the Mississippi River Valley and the Southeast USA. Extends from the Great Lakes until the Bahamas including Louisiana and Texas, as well as New Mexico. Very detailed with Indian tribes, forts and place names. Florida is shown as islands and inhabited by cannibals. Shows also explorer routes including De Soto and Hennepin. The uncolored cartouches showing Hennepin, a view of Niagara Falls, and a very early representation of a Bison with Indians. Map is based on Delisle’s landmark map of 1718, but covering a slightly larger area. Commonly called the ‘Buffalo Map’ for its distinctive decorative elements depicting a stylized buffalo, this hand colored work is one of the most interesting and decorative regional maps of America from this period. Comes from Johann Baptist Homann atlas “Neuer Atlas …” published in Nürnberg, circa 1720.
